Committee Chair Is Troubled By DSS
Read this interview that Marie Parente had with Massachusetts News in December of 2000. Do you think any of the hack wannabes will stick their neck out this far?... Guess Again
Please write Marie Parente. Thank her and ask her to run one more time for the children.

If the kids were killed by their parents we would cry, "Why did DSS not take the child out of the home" so now we complain they are doing it to early. In the end a judge makes the final decisions on all custody issues.
This interview was 5 years ago and little has been done to change things.
For her to say social workers can be incompetent is correct. So can judges, police, foster parents, and parents.
DSS is by no means a perfect entity. This piece does pin-point extremes in the cases. How many 51a's were there on Haleigh? They didn't all end up in court. Now based off of that wouldn't you rather they removed her then her sit in the state she is in now?
You can't have it both ways.
I am troubled about many issues cocerning DSS. However, most are Federal and State Laws that need to be changed. So far, it just isn't happening fast enough and it's on her watch.
Good comment, thanks for writing!
There are no easy answers here. DSS is a rogue agency bordering on criminal activity. We may post all the links we have about their activities. Google will get you a bunch of reading, enough to bring you to tears. (Type: DSS Parente)
You are correct that the change is glacial or not at all.
We think Parente should stay because she is passionate about the issue and has nothing to lose politically by taking a strong visible stand.
Your other choice will be a back slapping liberal Milford attorney who will fit right in with the “go along /get along” “my lazy brother needs a job” cronies on Beacon Hill.
If you’re a Republican… you wont have a choice.
I never have a choice as both Republicans and Democrats are complete failures in all levels of government.

The more you write the better we like you. Thanks again!
In response to above, Haleigh WAS in a foster home where the last and perhaps ultimate abuse occurred. Where was the DSS then? Children need an advocate, and when the DSS and the court system fails them, where is there recourse? Who is looking out for the best interests of the child? A guardian ad litem is appointed by courts in almost every other instance of law where children have an interest. Where are the guardians when the child comes under the venue of the DSS? Why wasn't a guardian appointed in the case of removing Haleigh's life support? Surely, this is a case where a third party should have advocated on behalf of the child.
I believe Haleigh was adopted at that point.(Her adoptive mother who was charged was in a murder/suicide.)That would mean that they attended classes on parenting, got background checks and had in depth case histories on them.
Haleigh's biological mother agreed with DSS.
I agree a third party would be helpfull. In some instances there are community advocates that attend the 6 month review where they create the plan for the child.(At least in the ones I have been to)Most definetly there should be an advocate in any major medical or life/death decisions.
The problem is where are all the people that will advocate? How do the get qualified ? Who appoints them?Do you realize how many children are under DSS?
Call DSS and see if they need any advocates.
