UPDATE: We will be posting additional information about the school budget but in the meantime ask your questions here. Jay Byer seems to be a regular reader here and we are sure that he will answer any questions you have.
Bottom Line: FY2007 budget $24,400,000 - $500,000 override for each town - 13 new hires.
The Mendon-Upton Regional School District’s open budget hearing is next Monday, March 13, at 7:00 PM in the auditorium at Nipmuc.
While we agonize over police and fire stations and multi-million dollar land deals we always seem to overlook the District School budget. Every other tax dollar you spend every year goes to education.
Be there on the 13th so you know what to vote for or against.

It seems to me when I look at the chart that compares per pupil spending to all the public school systems in MA Mendon Upton either spends the least per pupil or is in the bottom five school districts. Teachers aren't paid enough (compared to tech industry, never mind sports figures and celebrities) and they have MUCH more responsibilty. I think the Superintendent and School Committe have been doing a very good job and I will support the school budget until I see evidence that they are wasting my money.
Teachers do not work the full year. They are paid sufficiently.
Remember that the school has had overrides turned down so those number didn't rise. They then somehow "got by"
We will wait to see the budget before we judge it.
You use use statistics like a drunk uses a lamppost -- more for support than illumination.
I didn't post to scrap with you, I posted to tell you that my one vote will support the request of the school committee/superintendent. I suggest you read the chart and compare the numbers. I use the chart for the reason the DOE creates it. I want to see how much my town spends per student, how much we spend on the total school budget, and to compare one fiscal year to another. You may be quick witted but if that's all you can do is come up with a smartass response I can only guess you are one of those who had a bad experience either in school as a student or as a parent of children in school. Too bad.
Riff, There are many justified criticisms of spending on education here and everywhere else for that matter but at the end of the day Mendon-Upton has consistently spent less per pupil than most of the rest of the state.

HG,
I am aware of that fact. Just thought their are lots of facts on the DOE site and only some were being represented.(Thus my comment)
I encourage everyone to read the state dept of education web site.
The fact that we consistently spend less per pupil is good as long as the results are good. I looked at the numbers for regionals and we were fifth lowest of the 42 (five others had no numbers listed)
According to figures on that site teachers in Mendon-Upton were paid on average approx 4800 more in 2005 than 2004.
In the last five years our per pupil expenditure has increased 10%higher than the rate of student enrollment. It is still fairly low.
Anonymous,
I was a student here(so if my math is off don't blame me) and am a parent of students here. I have not had a bad experience with the schools.Yes, I am a smart ass.
No scrap was intended.I guess the point I wanted to make is we should look at the proposed budget first and then make our decisions.
Don't take it so personal. This was America and contrary to popular belief we don't have to agree.
I was unable to attend the meeting. Read this mornings article in the Milford Daily News. Does anyone have any information that can fill in the spaces.(Ex: increase in class size without the hiring of 14 new teachers)
How much has the student body increased?
Any information would help.
I would be interested to know in what areas can we be more efficient. Asking for more money is the easy way out. As a taxpayer, I don't have the luxury of simply increasing my pay to meet the rises in the current cost of living. If I can't afford it, I need to cut-back or become more efficient to meet my obligations. Today's governments don't seem to feel as though they need to do this, they just keep tapping into the tax payers for more.
