Business Beware

Here we go again. Sharon Cutler is "leaning" toward a duel tax rate in Mendon. What this woman doesn’t know would fill lake Nipmuc.

A duel tax rate, one for residential and one for commercial properties would establish a higher rate for business and lower the taxes that home owners pay. Sounds good (for home owners) until you look into it. The fact is that there is not enough commercial tax base in Mendon to offset the residential rate in any meaningful way. To have an impact on the residential rate local business would suffer under a huge increase in property taxes.

Boards of selectmen going back to the early eighties have looked at this idea. The conclusion has always been the same; it's a bad idea. It does nothing for home owners and will drive the Mom & Pop operations out of town. Other than one car dealership all we have are Mom & Pop businesses.

Lets hope that Mother Cutler doesn’t drag her apron string boys down the road and get them to indorse this dumb idea. If the BOS wants to help homeowners they can start by listening to the Finance Committee and tightening the belt. Stop trying to buy all the real estate in town and follow the law by putting contracts out to bid.

Hey HG Are you in bed with the assistant assessor or what? I heard that (almost word for word come out of her mouth.) Well isn't that interesting. I thought you two were arch enemies.

If by the phrase “in bed together” you mean the assistant assessor collaborates with the authors of this blog, the answer is the same. We don’t comment on who writes here or contributes material. It really doesn’t matter.

Dual tax rate in Mendon would be a mistake. HG gave most of the reasoning why its a bad idea. Mendon needs to find a way to attract a little bit more commercial tax base in the right parts of town. Dual tax rate wont encourage that growth.

At the very least, focus more on adding to the tax base before ever thinking about a dual tax rate.

Sharon Cutler must be doing something right, the criticism of her ideas is cruel and abusive. Somebody ticked off that their up and coming commercial adventure might have to pay more than Mendon homeowners? At least she is trying to come up with subjects that generate discussion of the important issues of Mendon's Day. A dual rate discussion is not such a bad idea. It should take place before Mendon becomes a border to border dealership.

Sounds like you have zoning issues. Why don't you address those. The criticism is not cruel and abusive at all. What statement in there is abusive (or cruel)? Sharon Cutler, sorry to say, has lived up to none of her campaign rhetoric.

Point out one town the size of Mendon with a similar commercial base that has a dual tax rate....we'll wait.

It's just another in a long string of dumb ideas from Mother Cutler.

Discussion of a bad idea is never wrong. Implementation of the bad idea, on the other hand, WOULD BE wrong. Nothing personal against Mrs. Cutler, but a dual tax rate in Mendon is not a good idea.

A duel tax rate wouldn't be that bad of idea if we had a comercial base. However we don't so it would make no sense. We should find ways to get businesses into to town and stop trying to scare them away. Having rte 16 and rte 140 completely developed would not be a bad thing, and would take some of the pressure off the residents. But we have to change our anti-development attitude.

You need to develop those areas judiciously, which is why it would be prudent now to address and update zoning.

Sharon Cutler is a boob. Someone pleeeese get that woman a job. Instead of coming up with these hair brain ideas she should be keeping an eye on Town Hall and the selectmen's office. I have been in to do business on several occasions and found almost every office closed on the main level. I have also made phone inquiries to answering machines. My calls were never returned. I for one would like to know what's going on. Sign me a concerned taxpayer.

The whole process of town government has suffered under Sharon's watch, and certainly since she has been chair. I hear the town administrator rarely makes an appearance. Who's minding the store???
