Fiscal Irresponsibility

Well it’s that time of year when the Board of Selectmen set the tax rate for the upcoming fiscal year. Look for some interesting things here.

Will Momma Cutler get her way and push an onerous tax increase on local businesses?

What will happen with Free Cash? Last year the town had $600,000 and they spent every dime. This year they have about 15% of that amount and all departments are waiting like a nest full of hungry robins.

Will the Assessors raise property values even thought prices are down by 10-15%? Milford did. The rubber will meet the road this year. The BoS has spent wildly with the blessing of the Finance Committee. The only place left to get money from is your pocket.

A suggestion, watch or attend the selectmen’s meeting Wednesday night. If Opie and the DJ cave in to Big Momma we are all going to pay more for our front row seats at the circus.

Well the DJ was absent and the issue was re-scheduled again for Monday. It’s up to Breen now. We will be watching David.

Opie is pro-business on any and every issue so that was no surprise. If you look close you can almost see the strings. Remember Dilly Dally?

The fact that Momma Cutler is hanging tough on this issue is a sure sign that she made some promise to someone, probably the school district. She trots out the elderly to make her point. What a farce, she didn't think twice about the fixed income folks when she was trying to buy an overpriced gift shop!

She is blind to everyone’s input that this is a bad idea. Let me repeat, what she doesn’t know about municipal governing would fill lake Nipmuc.

Where are all the 2007-selectmen wannabes on this issue? We have heard a rumor that Mike Ammendolia wants a crack at the job and that Dale Pleau may run again next year. Lets hear from those who would be selectmen.

hg, you continue to point the finger and stir the pot while calling everyone a name. i use to enjoy your take on things here in town but you have become mean-spirited and not so amusing as you once were. have you run out of good material or are you just becoming one of them?

I think the point was that no one on the BOS has ANY productive input on where the town is going and how they plan to get there. Let's get some ideas on the table to solve the problems, instead of reaching for pie in the sky.

i agree and must add that this is the way it has been for years. we all know what the town needs but there is no one in charge to put it in some kind of order. by the time the town really needs it we are hit with a number of things all at once or they shoot for the moon and out propose the size we need so nothing becomes acceptable. we "committee" things to death and have no one on the bos that will stand up and just say this is the order of things.

Thats why Mendon needs a Town Administrator. To prioritize.

I have been reading your comments for weeks now and your favorite pastime appears to be to criticise Sharon Curler. What's with the nicknames? Can't you make constructive criticisms for the good of the town? Make suggestions, do constructive criticisms. No wonder people don't want to run for office. Sitting ducks that is what they become. Stop the nonsense, grow up and think of the town not your ability to throw stones. Glad I am not a town official.

Whoops, Sorry. Sharon Cutler that is her name. Lest you make fun of that blunder. Sharon Cutler is doing a yeomen's job. I don't know her that well, but know she is sincere and her critics appear to be cowards who were in office, did a poor job, and enjoy criticizing Sharon and her colleagues. Whew, remind me never to run for those thankless jobs.

There are no names signed here. Would you care to comment on who you are talking about?

I am not the previous poster however I still think HG is Dale Pleau and that he enjoys arguing (playing?) with himself and will never get over the fact that the town booted him out. Instead he will pick on anyone who is in that chair. I would imagine that it is impossible to be right all of the time in everyones eyes when you are charged with making decisions that affect people in different ways. What we can all do is grow up and realize that some people really do want to make this town a better place. Unfortunately the only folks who run are the ones with the egos big enough to shield them from the never ending sniping and bad mouthing. We do need a real town administrator to put things in perspective and keep the egos out.

Some people just run because they have agendas. If Sharon Cutler was sincere about doing good for the Town, she would have been all for a Town Administrator. It's not only about egos, but also about control. Who has it and what they're going to do with it. A Town Administrator would take that control out of the equation. The selectmen want a puppet in that position so they can pull the strings.

Sorry, I was under the impression that there was a Town Administrator appointed. Where is he and what exactly is his job description?

Mendon does not have a Town Administrator. We have an Asst. Town Administrator. There is a big difference. An Asst. really has no power over employees. That's why the inmates are running the asylum. Town hall employees really don't have to answer to anyone. Everyone knows that McCue really can't do anything. He's a yes man for the selectmen. And I'm not Dale Pleau.

What does Mendon really need anyways? Some updated facilities (police, fire, town hall) and water for some. Outside of that, I'm actually glad not much gets done because I like the town the way it is. I don't care for commercial development and housing projects. My tax rate is acceptable and I enjoy the open space the town has to offer. If it aint broken...don't fix it.
