Due to the great response (Over 300 visitors this week and counting) we will keep this thread open for a while. The main reason we created this blog was to give a voice to people who otherwise would never be heard.

Well it's election time again in the hamlet of Mendon. This is the time of year when traditionally anyone with an agenda takes out papers attempting to promote that agenda or pump up a massive ego....
Will this year be different? It's not starting out that way. This morning on WMRC radio during an interview with 60's burn out Ed Thompson; Ken O’Brien announced he would not run for a second term. Less than an hour later former selectman Dennis Shaheen showed up at town hall to take out papers. (Smell anything funny?) This pair has an agenda and O'Brien is the brain. We'll keep you posted.
Town Moderator Art Holmes and former selectman Dale Pleau were seen at the town hall today. Art should quit while he's behind and what is Pleau up to? A Shaheen/Pleau match up? That would be great for this blog!

There was also mention in the Milford Daily that Dennis Breen (Owner of Fun Zone in Milford) had taken an interest in the position. As a one year resident of the town, I am unfamiliar with Shaheen and Dale Pleau and any of the mentioned candidates. Does anyone care to offer some background on these folks?
Shaheen and Pleau served on the board of selectmen together.They have some bad blood between them now. While Shaheen was chairman the town asked for bids to some Town owned land. Pleau and/or his wife appeared to have won the bid.(He was no longer on the board)Little did the board know that the tract of land would create an access point to other land owned by Pleau and/or his wife. The Shaheen led board squashed it.
During the tenure, the town approved an override to purchase the "Fino" property. (Across from the drive-in)Few people apparently realized Shaheen had lots of abutting property. Mr Pleau was quick to point it out.
We are sure someone can point out more accurate betrayals of these two occurences.Hopefully, it illustrates the point of the "inside baseball" that is often spoken of in Mendon politics. We are also sure their are more positive and negative stories about both. Hopefully someone else can bring more perspective to this blog for you.
As far as we know little progress has been made on either land purchase.(as far as utilization)
It will be interesting to see Mr Breen's views on how we can progress all the stalled projects.
I'll support a candidate who wants to address the infrastructure problem in a timely manner....at least before I get dripped on through the light fixtures again next summer at the Police Station. Shocking!
My name came up so I guess it's time to weigh in here. In the interest of accuracy, read on.
First Riff Raff, Neither myself nor the mother of my children ever owned any other land on Inman Hill Rd or behind the proposed lot the town was selling. It was not “inside baseball”. I defy anyone to show that the sale of that town owned lot would allow access to any developable land. My only reason for bidding on that land was to own a single family home and to be closer to my children who live several hundred feet away on another street.
During my term on the board I opposed the sale of any of the "Kelly Land". When Shaheen and O’Brien out voted me with regard to the sale I excused myself from any discussion of the matter at both open and executive sessions of the Board and made it clear that I would be a bidder. My signature appears on nothing of importance that has anything to do with that lot. Shaheen, O’Brien, and Anne Mazar (Land Use Committee) knew all this but later denied it for their own reasons.
I in fact did bid and submitted 3 bids in the names of 3 realty trusts to increase the chance that I would have the highest bid. (Which was successful) Where is it written that you can’t but 3 lottery tickets to increase your chances? They created the rules and I just played by those rules. I was no longer on the Board at that time.
The Board of Selectmen then decided to withdraw the lot from sale after they saw who had the highest bid. They claim that they “had new information that had come to them after the request for bids went out”. That would make the time line between June and September of 2004. They refused to say what this new information was. That is because they had no new information. They lied, plain and simple. And I stand by my statement that they are liars. I could have sued the town for disclosure of this NEW information and won forcing the sale but costing my neighbors more tax money to prove a point is not my style and the additional cost for the lot was not worth it in a peaking real estate market. Round one to the liars.
That vindictive move cost the taxpayers $271,000 in lost revenue and thousands in lost engineering costs. The Selectmen were invoking their power to punish me for opposing the purchase of the Fino Land. Shaheen and O’Brien were (and are) positioning themselves to make a pile of money off the development of the Fino land. Their problem is they are so full of themselves they didn’t understand that by making an enemy of me I would use my legal and professional expertise in real estate to expose their small town scam.
I ran for selectman last year to expose this taxpayer rip off and stop the purchase of this $3,500,000 contaminated field and swamp. To my surprise I found out that the local newspaper (Milford Daily News) and the powers that be at the local radio station had “friends” who were principals in the Fino land deal and would not publish any of the documented information I gave them, so much for objective reporting. The taxpayer got screwed again. Round 2 to the Press.
Instead the press chose to slander me on the word of Shaheen and his inside mentor, former selectman Jean Bavosi-Bertrand, the Assistant Assessor and resident hatchet women for the boys and herself. I am sure that you have heard the expression that local politics can be vicious. Shaheen and Bertrand are the poster children for that cause.
So be it. Now Shaheen and O’Brien want to switch positions. This makes sense because O’Brien has the development contacts and will be harder to follow as a private citizen and Shaheen has the “Good Old Boys Network”. Hanging Gardens is correct. This smells. And no, I am not Hanging Gardens but I will be emailing a substantial amount of information to this blog. I look forward to Mr. Shaheen turning in his papers. Round 3 and counting.

Well seems we have part of an answer from one of the potential candidates.
Dale seems to have offered his side of the story. Thank you Dale, we were relaying the way we read/remember and were hopeing those with more info would write in.Normally we do not believe all that we read thus the disclaimer.
Now, if Dale is running perhaps he could explain what he would do differently this time. What goals will he help accomplish?
Maybe Shaheen can also let us know his positions on the issues of the town.If, god fobid, he wins he should be removed during any talk of the Fino property.We shoul all keep our eyes on Ken.

The reason I was at the town hall had nothing to do with taking out papers.
Well I think Dale should consider running. As I see it he is the only selectmen to do anything constructive in Town Hall in a long time. He made the decision to correct problems in the Treasurer's office, even though he knew it would be unpopular politically. That's more than any other selectmen would do. Everyone put the blinders on in that situation so as not to publicly tarnish an old time Mendon name. Shame on every one that chose to ignore that situation just to keep their image clean. You're supposed to do what is in the best interest of the town, not your best interest. I believe Dale has already proven that would be the case. Too bad we can't say that of the other two candidates. How many of you out there that voted for Sharon Cutler intead of Dale are sorry now????

I didn't make the comment about Sharon Cutler but look back at her platform when she ran. She defeated Dale because he was mean to guests at the Selectmen's meetings and she promised to be nice.(check the Town Cryer from then) She then single handedly accused all 3 Park Commissioner of being liars without anything to back up her comments and disregarded the fact town counsel said the Commissioners had not done anything wrong (Sharon invited him to come!) Big surprise she got all 3 to quit and still has not apoligized for her comments. There has also been the finance committee meeting when the police chief was asked to have her removed for disorderly conduct at the meeting(she left promptly). Never mind the fantastic job she did shredding the fire department and taking away voters rights by creating a dual chief role long term contract without voter approval. Should I go on? Oh yeah, Ken was right there beside her all the way. Those two have set back Mendon years!
I think she is one big piece of "the" mess. I had expected much more from her. I know others did too. No name calling intended.
At least with Dale what you see is what you get. He may have been a little harsh at times, but he was up front about what he thought. Sharon Cutler is sneaky, clueless, and will look you right in the eye and lie. She has done nothing constructive since she was elected. She has spent countless hours trying to attack employees of the Town with her meddling. Personally I think she has way too much time on her hands and needs to go out and make a living instead of trying to pick apart town employees. To date I do not see anything positive for the town since she became elected. It's very obvious she came with a personal agenda.
All I can say is be very careful who you vote for Mendon. Let's not make the same mistake twice.
Wow, we consider ourselves pretty well informed and we never knew that Sharon was "Ejected" from a Finance Committee meeting. It must have been one of Sharon's more fluid evenings.
Although we would like to keep this thread about this election cycle it is interesting to note that according to tradition Sharon Cutler will be the Chair of the Board of Selectmen this coming year. It may be time to consider Prozac in the water cooler at the town hall.
There is the possibility that Tinio and whoever gets elected will deny her the Chair. Confrey and Pleau did that the first year that Shaheen was in line for the Chair.

The comments regarding Sharon Cutler's term on the Board could go on FOREVER. From her micro-management of paperclips and toilet paper at the Town Hall to her promoting her cronies to placement on a Capital Planning Committee. Sharon's agenda as a selectman was certainly a personal one. And unfortunately, Tinio has been an empty chair so far. What does that leave the people of Mendon for the future??? Certainly this Board has no accomplishments to its credit as yet. What resolutions to the problems that have been facing the town have been addressed in the past two years? The time is long overdue for someone to take back control of the town's mission, rather than their own. We have yet to see any tangible plans for a new police/fire station, any input on how to move forward on expanding the town library, etc., etc. And the Board has yet to move in any substantive way on the Fino land, as they have not yet addressed with the Town the cost of mitigating the contamination of the land, which would make this land useable. The Board of the last two years leaves many questions to be answered to the townspeople. Ken O'Brien appears to be bailing out before he can be held accountable. What of the others? Will we hold them accountable, or simply continue to let them go their merry way while promoting their own self-serving agendas?
It was wrong to deny Dennis Shaheen the chair when it was his turn, and it would be wrong to deny Sharon Cutler as well. They rotate each year and if it's someone's turn then they should be chair. Being chair only means she would run the meeting, sign for the board, but will give her no additional authority. Whatever she does, whether you like it or not, will remain the same. Besides, sometimes it's easier to watch what someone does when they're out front, and they are more limited in what they can do, micromanage, or whatever, because they need to act like the chair. There must be more important issues facing the town than who is chair of the BOS.
Traditionally, the chair sets the tenor of the meeting and the agenda. It can certainly be used to manipulate how the meeting is run, who gets a full hearing, and who gets short shrift. It can be a very powerful position, or in the case in this past year, it can demonstrate how you can completely by-pass anything meaningful and focus on inanities.
The chair sets the agenda for the board. What we know and apparently others are aware of it as well is that Cutler has her own agenda.
Also important is the fact that the Chair becomes the public face of the town of Mendon. Remember Lou Carpanito and Martin Auty?

Shaheen and Pleau are not the answers to our town problems, witness the misinformation campaign waged by the two of them over the new library.
Who can forget Shaheen's classic line at Town Meeting "You's people don't need this library."
We need someone who is looking to the future without regard for personal aggrandizement.
We have literally hundreds of new house lots just waiting to come on line. How are we going to balance the demands on service by new households without needed commercial development and infrastructure improvements?
The entire Blackstone Valley is exploding and we are way behind the curve in recognizing what the issues of tomorrow are.
Right now we are a pluckless crossroad/bedroom community with no master plan. People on these blogs are more interested in grinding axes over decisions that were made years ago then looking creatively to the future.
If someone has proof that the Fino property is contaminated, then bring it out. In general, the people in the chain of title who are responsible for the contamination, or who are owners of record closest to the date of contamination, are responsible for the cleanup not necessarily the latest owner. If there's a problem then send it to the Mass DEQE to be identified and addressed.
Otherwise, let's get the property developed. If properly done a mixed use development will generate sufficient revenue to pay for several new infrastructure needs for the town as well as providing commercial services and possibly even affordable housing.
Who cares if abutters make some money as well? Making a profit isn't a crime.
Let's move forward folks, not backwards. If you lose on an issue, put it behind you and keep going forward. This constant rehashing of history is what will kill this town not someone making a buck on their investment.
Remember Dale Pleau glowering at his constituents and declaring that he was the chair and that it was his meeting and that he could do anything he wanted. He was taunting, rude and acted like a child. It does matter who is chair.
Yes I remember that meeting well. I did say that I was running the meeting and we would vote when I said we would vote. And we did vote and the town voted and you lost. NO REGIONAL LIBRARY… BAD IDEA!
As I remember it the babies were in the audience that evening, shouting, waving their little signs and stomping their little feet and generally acting badly. And when they didn't get their way they sent one of their self-indulgent minions to terrorize Ken O'Brien's wife at her home requiring a police detail for the remainder of the evening. Nice crowd you hang with.
The taunting, rude and childish behavior was on the other side that night. Obviously the privileged well-educated upbringing of that crowd did nothing for the content of their character.
I always said I would fully support a library for the town of Mendon and still will. What has Sharon Cutler done for library needs in this town over the past 2 years… nothing.

The library issue really won't go away! Talk about re-hashing a dead issue. Voting against the library was about not losing control to another independent board while footing the bill (initially estimated at $200 per household) for an oversized facility. Proponents promised fund raising drives to lessen the cost to taxpayers, but have those same library supporters come forward with any fund-raising, any proposals, any alternatives for the town for it's own library?
As for the Fino land, it was tested and the results know to the BOS PRIOR to the Town Meeting vote on the appropriation of funds for the purchase, yet this was never presented to the public. Responsibility for the mitigation and cleanup of the land will lie with the town as they were aware of the dangerous levels of toxins and chose to move forward on the purchase. When land is at such a premium, didn't it occur to anyone to question why this land was marketed for years, yet found no buyers? That's why it is so galling that Mr. Shaheen chose to push the Fino land through, and support it's acquisition as a boon for the town, both on radio and in print, without revealing the problems with the land, or the fact that it would open up his back land for future development.
And Pleau's comment at the meeting was a tongue-in-cheek restatement of the phrase made by a former selectment during the time he was Chair who was one of the most outspoken library committee members, and who organized the library supporters to show up that evening with their placards and demand a vote.
All of these things are a matter of the context and the perspective in which each person views them. It's time to elect someone who will take a stand, deal honestly with the townspeople and the town employees, and meet the needs of the town, present and future. (It's also not a crime to want to keep the small-town atmosphere, which is what is so desireable to those who chose to move here.)
Could the alleged contamination be from years of poison in the apple orchard or the leaking gas tanks?
As far as legality of abutters making profits,we have no problems with that except when the abutter was a selectman and in office. Put a new cemetery on that end.
The library was most likely defeated because other things were more important.(Plus both sides engaged in rhetoric)
We are required to have a cemetery.(Swandale is filling up) We need a police station. We need a fire station.(Glad "someone" called OSHA, maybe we should have had a proper building before the full-time department.)
Chiefs Ernie was on record as saying we need seperate stations not combined.

The reason the past is brought up is:
1.We don't repeat it.
2.The same players are playing.
The contamination on the Fino land is chemical, all pesticides. The tests showed no contamination from the gas tank leak on route 16.
The poster who said that the town is responsible for any clean up is spot on. The Board of Selectmen had prior knowledge of the contamination from preliminary testing results they had ordered. Furthermore they ignored the recommendation of their own testing firm Tighe&Bond to do more testing to learn the true extent of the soil contamination. They went so far as to pass over an article on a special town meeting warrant to fund the additional testing. The taxpayers of Mendon will pay the cost of cleaning up the mess.
At that town meeting I challenged the motion by the selectmen to pass over the article and was shouted down my Mr. Shaheen, the abutter. His words were “we know all we need to know”.

The whole argument regarding Shaheens land being opened for development by the town buying Fino's land is absurd. ANYONE that bought it or the Fino's themselves could have struck a deal with Shaheen. If anything the deal has made his land less developable since the voters now control what happens instead of a developer looking at the bottom line.
