Things are heating up over at Kevin Rudden's blog, Mendon Commentary. Check out the post on the ZBA and the Century21 building issue. It's a shame what is about to happen to that fine old structure.
We have added a link to Mendon Commentary here. We suggest you keep up with both blogs to stay informed. You will not see any of this in the local daily paper. They are in the tank.

I was at the ZBA meeting. What a shame that all the ZBA was concerned about was "show us some more pictures of what it'll look like." Until a Planning Board Member suggested it, no one thought of a traffic study. And a concerned citizen brought up the protection of our historic buildings, which this one dates back to 1867. How can we let it go? Why can't we use some of the $400,000 plus in the Community Preservation monies to save it? Why hasn't someone petitioned that committee to do something about it?
Hi Blossom, I read Kevin's blog before this one so I asked some questions that you just answered.
Sounds like the ZBA is in their normal vegetative state. Too Bad, They are setting up to roll over as usual.
Do you know who was there to represent them? Engineers, lawyers? What bank in trying to lease the land? All that is public info if it came out at the meeting. Thanks for attending the meeting. I stayed home to watch the selectmen's meeting, more on that later. But I can report that Sharon Cutler was all in favor of her friend Judy Leonelli tearing down the building. They are two of a kind.
Some one needs to contact Ann Mazar mazar57@yahoo.com and the CPA folks to get the ball rolling. Also, many people are reading this blog every day. Most of those are town officials. If you post even a short message in support of saving this landmark they will notice. Anonymous posts are fine.
Thanks again for caring.
7 Items proposed and not one of them deals with buying the property. There IS a property owner who's rights need to be taken into account. Any list of proposals or potential solutions that fail to address it will not work.
Good post oldhouselady. email us or post when the petition is ready and we will post it here.
If it can be configured for printing we will set it up as a print out so people can mail it. Be sure to include the address.
I am a newer resident to Mendon (moved here 4 years ago). I want to say that I completely support saving this building. I am not against a another bank coming to town. It could be worse. But I have an issue with tearing down a historical site. Especially given what they did with that Inn in Uxbridge. What I would like to know is if Sharon Cutler supports tearing the building down, why? What are the benefits to the town of tearing down that building? We can have the best of both worlds solution here for everyone involved, including the owner. If Sharon can not come up with an answer that is clearly non political and clearly infers support to her friend who owns the property, then shame on her. And to think I voted for that representation. It won't happen again. Shape up Sharon! Do what's best for the town. You owe us answers. How does tearing down that building benefit the town!
Well Sharon the ball is in your court.
The poster makes a very good point; the Uxbridge Inn is a perfect example of community and business working together.
We know that you check in here several times a day so what say you Sharon Cutler?
I can understand that this house holds some historical value. Sure, I'd like to continue to view it rather than a modern brick bldg, but it's not mine and I can't tell who does own it what to do with it. Unless there are other suitors willing to renovate it, or some Historical Society willing to buy/preserve it....what is Mendon to do?
